Cameroon’s long-standing President, Paul Biya, has announced his intention to seek an eighth term in office in the 2025 presidential election.

Biya, who is currently 91 years old, has been at the helm of the Central African nation for an astonishing 42 years, having first assumed the presidency in 1982.

Biya’s political career began even earlier when he served as Prime Minister from 1975 until he became President. Despite his advanced age and growing concerns over his prolonged rule, Biya appears determined to extend his leadership beyond four decades.

In a move that has drawn criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups, President Biya has also postponed the country’s parliamentary and municipal elections, which were originally scheduled for this year, until 2026.

This decision has fueled speculation that Biya is maneuvering to maintain a strong grip on power as he prepares for another run at the presidency.

While Biya has remained largely silent on his motivations for running yet again, his decision is expected to spark further debate about the future of leadership in Cameroon and the broader implications for democracy in the region.

The 2025 presidential election is set to be a defining moment for Cameroon, as the country faces the prospect of continuing under Biya’s leadership or charting a new course after more than four decades of his rule.
