The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast, warning of widespread thunderstorms and heavy rains across the country from Friday, August 30, to Sunday, September 1.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, NiMet predicted that several states, including Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Taraba, Jigawa, Gombe, and Bauchi, will experience thunderstorms on Friday morning. “Thunderstorms are also expected later in the day over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and other northern states,” the agency noted.
The forecast extends to the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding states. “We anticipate thunderstorms over the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, and Nasarawa in the morning, with more storms likely in the afternoon and evening,” the agency’s report stated.
In the South, morning rains are expected in states like Abia, Imo, and Oyo, with showers continuing into the afternoon in Lagos, Rivers, and Bayelsa, among others.
For Saturday, NiMet forecasts continued thunderstorms across Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kano, both in the morning and later in the day. Southern states like Osun, Edo, and Delta will see consistent rainfall, especially in the morning hours.
“By Sunday, isolated thunderstorms will continue in the northern states, while the South will experience mostly cloudy skies with spells of rain in areas such as Ondo and Delta,” NiMet said.
The agency also cautioned residents, particularly in major cities, about the increased risk of flooding due to the expected heavy downpours. “There is a high likelihood of flood in urban areas, so we urge residents to take necessary precautions,” the agency warned, adding that strong winds could precede the storms in some areas.
NiMet advised the public to stay informed through regular weather updates and to follow safety advisories from relevant authorities. “Public and airline operators should rely on updated weather reports for effective planning,” NiMet emphasized.
