The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has initiated a comprehensive rehabilitation project for its pipelines and depots to enhance Nigeria’s energy infrastructure. This was revealed by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, during an interview on Sunday.

According to Soneye, the rehabilitation, expected to be completed within two to three years, aims to address longstanding issues in petroleum distribution and improve the country’s energy supply chain.

“This project is designed to ensure sustainable crude oil supply to refineries, seamless product distribution through pipelines, reduced reliance on trucks, improved energy security, and lower transportation costs. It will also reduce road hazards caused by fuel tankers,” Soneye explained.

The initiative is backed by a structured financial model and strategic partnerships. “We are leveraging the Finance, Build, Operate, and Transfer (FBOT) approach to ensure cost-effective funding. Despite financial constraints, we are committed to making this a reality,” he added.

Soneye emphasized that the project goes beyond replacing obsolete pipelines. “We are introducing advanced technology to enhance pipeline security, prevent vandalism, and modernize storage terminals.

These upgrades are critical to building a reliable and secure energy network for Nigeria,” he stated. Reflecting on recent achievements, Soneye noted the successful rehabilitation of the Old Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries by the end of 2024 as a significant milestone.

“Work on the new Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries is at advanced stages, reaffirming our commitment to eliminating fuel importation and transforming Nigeria into a self-sufficient producer and net exporter of refined petroleum products,” he said.

NNPCL’s efforts are a strategic step towards ensuring long-term energy stability and strengthening the nation’s economic growth.
