The family of late Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has received N7.5 million in public donations following an appeal for financial assistance by his widow, Stella Okafor.

The fundraising campaign was initiated by content creator King Mitchy after Stella disclosed that the family was facing severe financial difficulties, including unpaid school fees, outstanding rent, and electricity bills.

According to King Mitchy, the funds raised will be used to settle the children’s school fees, including the WAEC registration fees of the eldest daughter, offset outstanding rent obligations, and support the family’s relocation to a more affordable residence.

Announcing the outcome of the appeal on Instagram, King Mitchy expressed appreciation to members of the public who contributed to the fundraiser.

She stated that the support would enable the children to return to school and provide temporary relief for the family.

King Mitchy also revealed that she became aware of the family’s situation after being contacted by one of their neighbours, adding that her primary concern was ensuring that the children received the assistance they needed.

The appeal, however, generated controversy within the late actor’s family. Mr Ibu’s third son, Somtochukwu Okafor, disputed claims that the family was living in hardship and accused his stepmother of withholding information concerning the late actor’s estate.

He further alleged that Stella sold one of the actor’s Lagos properties for N60 million, although the allegation has not been independently verified.

Stella had earlier stated that the family had been without electricity for two months due to unpaid bills and that some of her children had been sent home from school because of outstanding fees, prompting widespread sympathy and financial support from Nigerians.

The situation has once again highlighted the financial difficulties faced by some entertainers after leaving the spotlight. Earlier this year, veteran actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known for his role as Papa Ajasco, also appealed for public assistance after experiencing financial hardship.
